Sorry to reply to such an old post, but I have seen Williarob use a technique that involves creating a noise map the same way one would create a dirtmap, but by using a DNR effect and futzing with layer merge types, applying the appropriate changes to the denoised footage, and then adding back the original noise. This technique has proven useful for 4k77 2.0 so far.Frogacuda wrote: ↑Thu Jun 23, 2022 9:00 amNot very helpful in this case, actually. In this case the "noise", while easy enough to remove, would be impossible to put back in as it's not really random noise but a pretty distinctive texture/sequence overlaid on the scene. And, when you remove it, you'd find the loss of detail and the impact that has on the scene quite noticeable.Garrett Gilchrist wrote: ↑Tue Jun 21, 2022 9:47 pm I suppose noise could be removed from the intentionally noisy scenes to ease the process.

Re: The Thief and the Cobbler: Recobbled Cut Mark 4
For the tenth anniversary of The Thief and the Cobbler Recobbled Cut Mk4, we have been working on some new and revised shots, correcting and restoring the film further.
This has included some new restoration and art by myself as well as about four new animations from Dennis Van Hout and Kiko Pablo. I have referred to this as the Recobbled Mk4-2.
I am looking for a few professional-level artists to contribute work. I cannot currently offer payment (although anyone interested in donating can also contact me).

Are there any particular goals set for Mark 4-2, and could any work done for 4-2 also be able to lend itself for a possible Mark 5 if all goes well?

Re: The Thief and the Cobbler: Recobbled Cut Mark 4
I have selected about twenty minutes worth of the film for further restoration, and have been doing heavy restoration work for the past couple of weeks. I am looking into scenes which could be cleaned up further or improved in other ways.
The Thief in the War Machine was further restored about a year ago, and now I am working on standard-def scenes throughout the film. I currently have a reel of about ten minutes of shots which are now improved in some way. This has included some material which isn't actually used in the Recobbled Cut, like the early pencil test reel of the Brigands, done in a cartoonier style, which looks a lot better now after re-restoration.
We are hoping that a few more professional animators step forward to animate a few more new shots. (We are not looking for amateur help.)
About ten minutes of material exists in the Recobbled Cut as storyboard only, and was never animated.
While I am an artist myself and have inked and redrawn a lot of promotional artwork for the film, I have mostly been avoiding doing new animation myself, in favor of improving the restoration in other ways with my unique skill set.
We wouldn't attempt to reanimate a scene where the pencil animation is very finished, and where we don't have it in high quality to recreate.
We could do storyboards, or scenes where the character models have to vastly change anyway -- basically anything where it wouldn't suffer by comparison to the workprint because it's apples and oranges at that point.
I also have a soft spot for material which only survives in the Recobbled in very low quality (Calvert WIP / Keramidas stuff) although some of this is in A Moment In Time so theoretically exists. The Brigand eye poke, for example, exists in the Calvert WIP but in such low quality that it felt like a suggestion, and was recreated by Chris Fern for the Mk4.

Looking for donations.
For the tenth anniversary of The Thief and the Cobbler Recobbled Cut Mk4, we have been working on some new and revised shots, correcting and restoring the film further.
This has included some new restoration and art by myself as well as - so far - four new animated shots from Dennis Van Hout and Kiko Pablo. A couple of other artists have also expressed interest.
This has all been work on a volunteer basis, but ideally I'd like to pay them something for their trouble. You can send donations via Paypal, Zelle or Square to gilchristgarrett @ gmail. com with the note that this is for artists (not myself) working on The Recobbled Cut, and I can pass that along to artists like Dennis and Kiko.
