Someone actually did the edit on these. I'd never bother myself, but there you go ...

Dick shows the film on tour so much these days - do you think anyone could get away with recording the whole movie from their seat? Or are they patrolling the audience for that?

Just to have camcorder footage of his cut of the film for reference would be fantastic

I have paid $10 for Vimeo Plus and am uploading Thief videos to Vimeo here:

Torrents also available, as seen in the first post of this thread.

The Princess and the Cobbler (The Thief and the Cobbler Calvert Cut)

https://vimeo.com/133884158

This is not the good version of The Thief and the Cobbler. This is what it turned into after Fred Calvert took over as director, turning Richard Williams' would-be masterpiece into something much cheaper-looking and much, much worse. A lot of great animation was thrown out of this version. So watch the Recobbled Cut instead.

Here's a copy from a rare timecoded VHS tape from Allied Filmmakers. The film carries the title "The Thief and the Cobbler" here but really this is the version referred to as "The Princess and the Cobbler" elsewhere. There is also a version called "Arabian Knight" which is worse than this one.

Arabian Knight (The Thief and the Cobbler Miramax Cut)

The worst possible version of The Thief and the Cobbler. [Watch the Recobbled Cut instead, if you want to see what director Richard WIlliams intended.]
Fred Calvert had already dumbed down the film heavily in his version, The Princess and the Cobbler. For "Arabian Knight" Miramax added voiceovers to The Thief and other characters, making the film look like a cheap Aladdin ripoff - which is something like the opposite of the truth. Fans of the film find this version hard to watch. This is also the version you'll see on Netflix or DVD - cropped there. This is in widescreen from a rare Japanese DVD.

A lot of people think The Thief is coded Jewish, but his name on the original model sheet is "Abdul Salaam," which is heavily coded as an Arabic / Muslim creation. It's also worth noting that Richard Williams drew himself similarly to The Thief, and also believed the character resembled original lead Thief animator Ken Harris.
