Great article, and a good point to keep in mind. The more accepted LGBT people become in the culture at large, the more likely someone is to come out when they're still a minor or are in college and have been brought up with the expectation of financial support from their family. But you never really know how your family will react, and that makes this one of the most vulnerable populations in America. I never even seriously considered coming out until I was in college (and this isn't ancient history--we're just talking 15 years since I graduated from high school), so in a sense I'm kind of jealous of the kids joining Gay Straight Alliance groups today. But I don't envy that fear of asking, "Just how well do I know my parents?", because the worst that can happen is pretty bad.

You think Mad Magazine regretted lending their name to the comedy movie Up The Academy?

I've been bullied by police, but this actress wins by asserting herself regardless -- the transcript is pretty funny.

http://www.dailykos.com/story/2014/09/1 ... tail=email#

We don't specifically have audio of how it began -- someone apparently called in prostitution after seeing a black woman kissing a white man. But the rest is .... she asserts what nonsense this is, and so the cop just keeps doubling down to show his power over her and that he "doesn't work for" people like her.

I've been bullied by cops before, for no reason, and I wasn't assertive in that way. Cooperating didn't help the situation. If they're on a power trip and just want to humiliate you for awhile, they're going to do so regardless.
