Rules: We're talking pre-2000 here. Something is not "lost" or "hoarded" just because it's not currently on Youtube. We don't discuss Youtube film reviewers or deleted Youtube videos, or that creepypasta you saw in 2007 that you think is haunted. Don't be superstitious or childish.

Be respectful and modern. Don't be bigoted, hateful or weird. This is a left-leaning safe space for people of all races and origins, LGBT, etc. Since we're discussing older media, we will sometimes be including media which is offensive. That's unfortunate, but we can't change the past.

"Being offensive" shouldn't be the main appeal of any material we're discussing. It's more like, "this is an otherwise harmless show which has a couple of offensive episodes, and we'll try to not to focus on that." But we're not going to talk about Song of the South and the Censored 11.

If you're angry about something that FOX News (or right-wing media) is angry about this week, you're in the wrong group and will probably be banned.

American TV shows pre-2010 all exist in HD, either shot HD or remastered from film prints

Meanwhile at the BBC, if they hadn’t junked it, it exists in SD, or the worst “HD” you’ve ever seen !

Why must I love Doctor Who?

Plenty of American TV shows only shot on video, most of them just didn’t make it overseas.

I would even say that most US TV was shot on standard-def video for quite a long time. And most of the shows that were shot on film haven't been transferred to HD. Many have, of course, and that's the stuff you find on streaming, but that's a sort of survivorship bias.

I can't think of many old BBC shows that would or could exist in HD, and an extraordinary amount junked outright, but if we're talking British TV in general, there's a fair amount of, say, ITC/ATV shows which have been remastered at least.

If the film elements still exist, and it's rare for outsiders to know whether they do or not, there needs to be a serious financial incentive, and worldwide streaming, for older US shows to get remastered properly in HD.

I was surprised Star Trek Deep Space 9 and Voyager didn't get remasters after TOS, TAS, and TNG, although DS9 is finally in the works now apparently. (There's a lot of "new" CGI FX that would be required to do it right. But Star Trek remains a pillar of Paramount programming. With Babylon 5, they compromised by AI-upscaling the very dated-looking CGI and FX shots, but otherwise recreating the film in HD. Imperfect but still.)

I don't think 90s WB cartoons Tiny Toon Adventures, Animaniacs, and Pinky and the Brain have been remastered in HD, or 70s-80s sitcoms Happy Days and Laverne & Shirley.

A fair amount of older US TV is lost as well, or unavailable. It's not nearly as dire a situation as it is with archive TV in the UK, and would be of niche interest, but I find that UK "lost media researchers" assume that all US material exists and refuse to discuss the matter.

Almost all of the pre-1972 Tonight Show (Johnny Carson, Jack Paar) is wiped, and the first Shari Lewis Show ... The first version of still-running game show Jeopardy! is almost all wiped, though that would be niche now.

Negatives for the 1964 Julie Newmar sitcom My Living Doll were destroyed in the 1994 Northridge Earthquake; it's unclear what still exists today although 11 of 26 episodes were found for DVD release.

The Garfield and Friends remaster isn't a total disaster (it's also on Roku Channel along with the earlier specials), but the new season 1 title sequence certainly is. It's awful! For the most part otherwise it's a decent HD version. There's a few segments which they couldn't find the film for, which are presented as if they're being watched off a television. It's also cropped to 16x9 in every version I've seen, which is pretty awful for a 4x3 show. The color timing is also very different.

What they should have done for the intro and the missing segments is an AI upscale, although that tech didn't really exist at the time and wouldn't make enough of a difference now.

The title cards all look good, no complaints there. The end credit recreations that change the design up are absurd.

The specials all look fine.

It's funny what you find on these streaming service sites. Tubi has Fred Calvert's The Mini-Munsters in HD .... of all things!

Have you heard of ‘’The Paul Williams Show” (June 27 1979) NBC 30 minute NBC TV pilot that starred singer/songwriter Paul Williams (Smokey and the Bandit, Phantom of the Paradise) as a children’s tv host with a policewoman girlfriend with a neighbor girl. He sang and also wrote the theme song of the pilot.

Well, I am a Paul Williams fan. I don't have this one but I do have a couple other things I could share.

Aired twice. 6-27-79

A sitcom pilot. Paul Williams sang the theme and opening credits song.

Paul Williams plays Paul Hamilton who hates what he is doing and is looking for better things. Paul plays the sidekick of local kids' show host Captain Rocket, wearing an uncomfortable and unwieldy costume as "Marvin the Martian." When Captain Rocket quits, he is promoted to host, which leads him to be an object of ridicule to the kids in the studio audience. This being shortly after the Viking probes landed on Mars, the kids in the "audience" didn't buy it. There are scenes of Paul’s apartment. The little girl next door is played by Dana Hill. Then it goes back to the studio. Paul changes into his street clothes and talks honestly to the kids. They immediately warm to him and the show becomes a hit.
