I actually suggested The Thief get a Criterion release in a wish list thread over at Home Theater Forum a few years ago. The response I got there suggested that the amount of legal red tape surrounding the film makes such a release virtually impossible.

Very interesting, Dennis. In the video, I did notice that the guy cited some deleted moments involving Fflewddur (such as the full ballad after the first escape from the castle) as Katzenberg mandates, but I have to imagine at least most of those bits were deleted before the film went into animation...
