A beginner's guide to WhoSprites
Advanced System for Animated Doctor Who Reconstructions
By Garrett Gilchrist

Welcome to WhoSprites, a collection of high quality digital artwork intended to make it possible for you - yes, you - to animate lost Doctor Who episodes, bringing them back to life.

You are free to use this artwork, as long as you give credit to Garrett Gilchrist and WhoSprites and the BBC, and as long as you are legitimately using it to animate lost Doctor Who episodes from the Troughton and Hartnell eras for no profit. You can write me at tygerbug (at) yahoo.com. Doctor Who is copyright the BBC, and no infringement is intended. These images are not intended for commercial use or profit.

The sprites are located in these directories:

A huge amount of artwork has been created, covering pretty much all the Hartnell and Troughton companions, and supporting characters from certain stories (like Evil of the Daleks, The Tenth Planet, and Power of the Daleks). However, most of this artwork is still line art, and has not yet been colored in photorealistic detail. (Or one frame has been colored but this hasn't been applied to every frame yet.)

This beginner's guide will show you which characters HAVE been finished in full color, and which files you should download to get started on trying to animate these characters.

Each character will have a bunch of different heads. Each head has a different expression on it. All have different mouths, half have different eyes. You should be animating the heads and eyes separately.

Use the soundtrack to any lost episode, such as Evil of the Daleks or Marco Polo. All are available on CD from the BBC, and reconstructions are available on the internet and at recons.com, for free. Also for free at the BBC site are telesnaps from the missing episodes, photographs which will show you what the characters and scenes looked like.

Use all the different heads, in a video editing or animation program, such as Final Cut Pro, Premiere, or Flash. Every few frames or so, switch to a different head, to match the lip sync on the audio. Make the mouth movements match what you hear.

Have a look in the 1videos directory and watch the videos that have already been done, to see what the animation is supposed to look like. Also purchase the BBC DVD of "The Invasion."

Every JPEG of the finished "head"s and "headless" bodies are on a bluescreen or greenscreen so you and your computer know what to cut out.

You can actually just animate the heads, static, on that blue or green background, getting the lip sync right with the head itself not moving at all, and then figure out the body and head movement later, as well as what the background will be.

Now, let's get started downloading!

Tutorial: "How to Do it" - This talks about lip sync. You've already read some of this.

Tutorial: "Color Layers" - This tells you how to create your own color sprites from the black and white sprites posted in the main directories, by using the provided color layers. For advanced users only!

Patrick Troughton - version 7
This versatile sprite comes with 22 different heads, and a headless partial body, capturing the second Doctor in great detail and with a huge amount of different eyes. Reference from "Tomb of the Cybermen." Download all these different heads here:
