Got a shoutout at 32.20 on this Konami NES stream, for telling @RetroPalsHQ about the camera issues with Konami Wai Wai World 1. I'd provided them with a hacked ROM earlier that day. Thanks RetroPals!

The largest licensed NES game might be Metal Slader Glory, an adventure game by HAL Laboratory, which used a 1MB ROM.

HAL used a 768KB ROM for Kirby's Adventure.

So did Koei's Blue Wolves and White Does (Genghis Khan, strategy game) and Enix's Just Breed.

Mappy-Land.

We got this in the US via Taxan. It was a common enough game and I remember playing it. I don't think it's great, but it's what you'd want from a 1986 NES/Famicom spinoff of Mappy that uses the NES' strengths to build on the gameplay of the original.

There was another Mappy game in 1986 which is less well known - Hopping Mappy.

Mappy's enemy boss cat is known as either Goro or, uh, Nyamco.

In a 2013 webseries, back when Shiftylook was trying desperately to do something with old Namco IP, he ran a company called Nyamco. (This also included a dating sim, Namco High, and a mobile Wonder Momo reboot.)

"Probably the most intellectually taxing game on the NES ... It’s honestly baffling understand how a kid could get through this game. It’s immense and crazy. Did anyone anywhere actually beat Legacy of the Wizard when it was new? Taking on the game without a FAQ or a map is like shaking hands with the devil himself. It’s much much more intimidating and taxing than more famous titles like Zelda II or Castlevania II. This was the ultimate game to play through piecemeal, meeting with your real-life friends and talking about who got to what part of the dungeon and found what hidden shop/item/gold where. What an awesome game."

"[Legacy of the Wizard] tends to provide you with the item that you are most in need of.

If you have no keys, enemies provide you with keys.

If you are low on magic, expect to earn potions.

If you have very high amounts of life, magic, keys, and money, expect to find poisons."

Falcom's Dragon Slayer series began in 1984 on Japanese computers like the PC88. Only a few installments made it to the US on NES (IV), TurboGrafx (Reboot), and DOS computer(Sorcerian)

Falcom's Dragon Slayer Xanadu never came to the US, after the creators of Ultima 3 noticed some copied artwork.

Faxanadu NES did, and Romancia NES has been fan translated. Sorcerian was ported to US DOS and became its own franchise. Legend of Heroes came to TG16CD.

Here's Falcom's Dragon Slayer 6: Legend of Heroes, which came to the US for TurboGrafx-16 CD, complete with questionable voice acting and anime-ish cutscenes. This was also a popular series, spawning over thirteen sequels.

In 2013 a group of fans started to remake Legacy of the Wizard in HD, but did not complete the project. Legacy of the Wizard is now supported by 3D NES emulator 3DSEN.

@RetroPalsHQ
does rankings for mascot platformers, if you want to look at some highly ranked ones that don't get much love these days.

https://retropals.club

Rocket Knight Adventures / Sparkster, Dynamite Headdy, Super Tempo, Celeste, Pulseman, Tomba!, Super Bonk series, The Adventure of Little Ralph, Wiz 'n' Liz, McDonald's Treasure Land Adventure, Mr. Gimmick, Popful Mail, Tryrush Deppy, Keio 2, Puggsy, Downwell, Plok, Little Nemo, Majyuuou (King of Demons), Cool Spot, KickMaster, Panic Restaurant, Goemon Mystical Ninja series, Monster in My Pocket, Felix The Cat

If you include Hudson, Konami owns some good ones.

Sooo - we've discussed the Dragon Slayer series. One of the first, maybe the first action RPG, which led to Legacy of the Wizard and the Legend of Heroes series ... turns out the original is something of a remake of an obscure 1982 US Apple II game, Caverns of Freitag.
