Interview with Clive Smith suggests that a 35mm print of the Canadian Cut of Rock & Rule was screened at the Ottawa International Animation Festival in 1996, and unless the commentary on the DVD says otherwise, Smith's preferred cut of the film is the Canadian one.

The interview seems very confused about the whole matter, though, on both sides. I think if a 35mm print of the Canadian cut existed, it would have been used for the DVD and Blu-Ray rather than a VHS copy. I'd be happy to be proven wrong.

[The print used for the DVD and Blu-Ray is a "Ring of Power" print, with the "Rock & Rule" title faked in.]

It would be very much worth emailing anyone running the festival now to ask about this. In fact, I've just done so.

You crazy devil, might as well e-mail Unearthed Films about the Workprint too, since it's pretty obvious that it might exist outside of those 15 minutes we know, and speaking of the Ring of Power print, isn't the intro of that version supposed to be on the DVD? Lumpytoast told me that it's actually just the Workprint intro.

I sent Clive your question. He's going to see what he can find out.
I was here in 1996 but I can't remember what version we showed. I know we
got the print from Nelvana...or at least that's what I remember.

Will let you know if I hear back from Clive.

That's great! Thanks for doing that.

Should credit Iggy Pop.

Also it's spelled "Garrett Gilchrist." ;)

I began work on the new version of the edit a while ago with a new HD rip of the film, several scenes that would transition from the Canadian VHS to the new HD version of the film would be color corrected and have the edges around it filled with the entire background, which is something that I wanted to do since the very first cut of the edit, some scenes in the first version that were noticeably slowed down to make up for the missing time were now restored to their original lengh, as for the Workprint, removing the splices was easy for the most part since most of the film is on twos, as for the splices that couldn't be deleted, or scenes that would be too dirty to be on the film, I was going to try to restore them to an extent, but sadly my computer got a virus that resulted in losing the file that I was editing the film on, so until I can get word of confirmation that I lost not only the file for the film but several other film projects I was working on, I don't think I'll do any progress on this new version. :thief:
