Doctor Who: Reference Time

Back in 2009, I had a series at Who3D.co.uk where I would post images of 1960s Doctor Who actors in non-Doctor Who roles.

At the time I was animating lost episodes of Doctor Who, so I did this for my own reference.

Those Who3D threads now require a login to view, so I thought I'd repeat these threads here for any old-school Doctor Who fans.

These were originally accompanied by hundreds of additional grabs posted at Megaupload, but those are no longer available due to that site's demise.

Patrick Troughton's first Doctor Who episode was Power of the Daleks, in November-December 1966, but he had already been appearing on television [and in films, of course] for two decades at that point.

For our purposes, we will note that he did two episodes of "The Saint" prior to Doctor Who.

"The Saint" Interlude in Venice -  7 October 1966 (Season 5, Episode 2)

and, over two years earlier --

"The Saint" The Romantic Matron - 16 January 1964 (Season 2, Episode 18)

Let's look at the 1964 episode for a moment, keeping in mind it's nearly three years prior to Doctor Who.

Troughton is in his Salamander mode here, a character type he would return to frequently. He plays a police inspector, in three scenes. There are very few moments where he looks like Doctor Who - he has more of a Salamander look about him. Still, there are a few moments.

Again in a Salamander-like role, Troughton is quite good as an Italian police inspector toward the end of the episode. This is right before his Doctor Who role.
