Here is Shari Lewis, with Lambchop and Charley Horse, in a classic Christmas clip from The Ed Sullivan Show. Cute and funny.

I am actually thinking about doing a fan version of the stop-motion film The Nutcracker Fantasy from 1979. I wasn't aware until recently that the Japanese version had some brief extensions to some of the scenes and would love to take the English cast version and try to combine them. The only sources out there are VHS. I will have to do some research regarding VirtualDub in terms of which filters would work best to restore the image of both versions as best as possible and then try to sync them as best as I can if I were to do that.

Anyway, it is a very interesting piece of stop-motion animation from 1979. The story revolves around Clara, as in the Nutcracker ballet, however, the movie is more based on the book, albeit loosely.

Not the most memorable of Christmas/Holiday films out there, and a tad creepy. I would not suggest showing this to younger children as parts would probably scare them.

On its second airing, Rankin-Bass's Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer got a new ending, with Santa visiting the Island of Misfit Toys. Here is the rarely-seen original:

At this point, a few short scenes were cut from the special, and "We're a Couple of Misfits" replaced with "Fame and Fortune" to appease one exec who didn't like it. Today those scenes have been restored.

The original also featured advertisements for GE home appliances featuring Santa's elves from the special, as you can see here.

Oh, and here's The Nutcracker Fantasy.

In regard to Nutcracker Fantasy I have a couple of versions myself. One of them was taped off TV by my mom way back when. The other is a DVD copy which the film's producer was selling on ebay along with a signed copy of the script, behind the scenes materials and other such things. Sadly, the producer simply did a VHS grab, and yes, I did double check that he was really the producer and on the up and up. I think my original taping from TV might have better quality in some ways.

I have yet to watch the original Japanese version so, once I find a copy of that I will evaluate the video quality there.

The one on YouTube seems to lack detail in the image, especially in the opening scene.

I also enjoy all of the old Rankin Bass specials and such overall.

A reminder that a good copy of the Star Wars Holiday special, the WHIO, has leaked as both single and dual layer discs. Haven't seen it on a public tracker yet. It's very good tho.

It's about that time again, for Richard Williams' Oscar-winning version of A Christmas Carol, starring Alistair Sim.
