Personally for inking I use a Copic F02 Drawing Pen. I used to use Micron and Staedler pigment pens. There are some interesting brush pen recommendations here --

Alex Williams of the FLIP Animation Blog asked me to write a few words about freelancing, and getting paid for it. Is it acceptable for artists to work for free, or for low wages? What can they do to avoid being exploited? What have I learned from the often low-paid and frustrating life of a freelancer, and what would I say to others trying to do the same? As a struggling artist I won't pretend to have all the answers, but here are my thoughts on the subject --

Stephen Silver writes:
I wanted to share with you a list that I recently gave to my students.
Understand the WHY and the HOW will come from that.
Why am I not fulfilling what I desire?
Because you're focusing too much on the how instead of understanding why.
Why should I observe people?
It gives ideas, it helps understand gestures, movements, feeling and expressions.
Why should I draw every day?
It will strengthen your shorthand and observation skills.
Why should I learn from other artists?
It will teach you to observe other shape languages that you may not think of or be aware of. It will teach you new techniques.
Why should I create my own intellectual properties?
It will give you your own voice and will give you a purpose. It will give you opportunities to be seen and it can even earn you extra income.
Why do I need to be versatile?
It will give you more opportunities as an artist within the studio and freelance environments.
Why should I do life drawing?
it will help bring your characters to life it will teach you construction, balance, gesture, caricature, observation, lighting anatomy and forms.
Why should I learn about the business of art?
It will help you protect yourself, make good decisions, build confidence and teach you how to value what you do.
Why should I set goals?
It will teach you to not procrastinate, give you a focus, a target to acquire. It will give you something to look forward to achieving and will help you discover your true purpose.
Why do I need to take risks?
It will help you break out of the box, your comfort zone. It will help you discover more about yourself your potential. It will help you avoid regret and will open up many possibilities.
Why should I stop worrying about my future?
Because everything is going to change and nothing is guaranteed. Set goals and follow them through to the best of your ability. Focus on accomplishing one thing at a time.
Why am I uninspired and lacking motivation?
Because you don't know what your true belief or purpose is. You don't know why you want what you want. You have not experimented enough and you're too caught up in other peoples lives, their accomplishments not your own.
Why am I fearful?
Because you've convinced yourself it won't work out. You have told yourself it's impossible. You haven't done enough research and you may be more concerned with other people’s opinions instead of your own gut feelings.
Why am I not getting what I want in life?
Because you don't think you can and you haven’t made a firm decision to see your ideas all the way through.

How much should you charge for an art project?

As a test, I put in my last big project - it said to charge ten times what I got. That's one I got screwed on though.
