The Beach Boys were one of the most innovative and influential singing groups of their time but they really seem to be more remembered for their corny radio hits than the experimental psychedelic rock masterpieces they created in their heyday. I’ve always wondered why that is, but now I know. This episode of Full House single-handedly ruined the Beach Boys for an entire generation.

Seriously, what’s up with the Beach Boys guest starring on Full House all the time? It’s like the sole reason that I thought they were lame when I was a kid.

Beach Boys on the Jack Klugman/John Stamos sitcom "You Again?" This is apparently what got Stamos a job as drummer of the Beach Boys - Mike's attempt to find a group heartthrob and replace Dennis.

Stamos, in a pink tank top, was present for Kokomo, the 1988 hit which was paired with an amazingly terrible Tom Cruise movie, Cocktail.

Oh God, I didn't know Stamos became an actual member of the band. It makes sense... he sings lead on the Summer In Paradise version of "Forever". Bit shameless.

Stamos is still a member of the Beach Boys, off and on.

Rikki Fataar of the Rutles was a member from about 1972 to 1976, and briefly in 1979 or so. Fataar was a drummer, replacing Dennis as needed.

More happily, here's some of this.

Fataar actually wrote a couple songs for the Beach Boys, for the So Tough and Holland albums. Both albums are flawed, but definitely not terrible.

Needless to say his Rutles work was better :gopher:

I'd assume it's worth tracking down Rikki and Blondie's work with The Flames. I've always heard good things about it.

Holland is, in many ways, the best post-SMiLE Beach Boys record. Every song sounds like the band was hungry to be creative. Not a bad tune on that album. Definetly tied with Wild Honey in that regard.

Speaking of songs Ricky and Blondie wrote, here's Holland outtake "Hard Times".

Sunflower is easily my favourite post-Pet Sounds BB album, though Love You and all their late 60s stuff is great too. I know a lot of people love Holland though.
