I'm sure that can't be true for everyone, :) I love SMiLE Sessions and Pet Sounds for sure. But my LP of Summer Days, or the twofer of Friends & 20/20 get a lot of replay by me. 'Busy Doin' Nothing' and 'Transindental Meditation' being some of the grooviest tracks from 'the dark 1968' in my book. Or the greatest slow 'n' melodic number 'Let The Wind Blow.' And lest us forget what was the calm before the storm of 'The Little Girl I Once Knew', :D

For me, my "essential set" is just straight on thru 'Shut Down Volume 2' to 'Holland' with all the creative rises and falls inbetween. Even 'Marcella' gets some points from me, I named a character after it! x3

Nobies wrote:Pet Sounds and SMiLE are not the "only two essential records". This is bullshit rhetoric that's constantly spouted by people without the attention span to sit through more than two records.

I go out of my way to listen to live bootlegs, in addition to entire discographies, thank you very much. Though I haven't done the same with The Beach Boys yet, what I will say is that apart from individual songs, I wouldn't credit the other albums I have heard as being musically and consistently on par as "Pet Sounds" or "SMiLE". I should have gotten that across better. Maybe "Beach Boys Today!"

There are more than a few good Beach Boys albums in the classic era, though also a lot of tracks that are best forgotten. I tended to keep the tracks I really liked in a playlist and remove all the rest, burning that to disc.

Anyway, here's a thing:

In general, when looking at pop music made in the 20th century, there's very little of it that's musically on par with Pet Sounds and SMiLE. The bar can only be set so high before everything else feels slight in comparison.

Ah, but let's set the bar high.

Peter Hollens and Brian Wilson chime in with this garbage:

I'm not too big on it. Although it's better than the God Only Knows charity single. I feel bad saying that. :(

A shame knowing there's a cut of that track featuring Frank Ocean rather than...

I think this is the best performance of "Good Vibrations"...it's from late 1966, so it's still fresh in their heads and they hadn't played it a billion times yet (in fact, it was only the second time they'd ever played it live).
