The Thief and the Cobbler: Recobbled Cut

Pictures of cats welcome?

A safe haven for film buffs, comedians, moviemakers, and lovers of the glorious and absurd in our popular culture. We've brought lost films back to life, created tons of our own movies, and generally chronicled the funny and strange on the internet since 2001.

More news on the Roger Rabbit sequel, and good news; no mo-cap!:

http://toontownantics.blogspot.com/

"Robert Zemeckis was interviewed while attending the “Cine & Chianti” retrospective in Tuscany (Italy) and he talked again about the upcoming Roger Rabbit sequel. He said that probably Steven Spielberg will join him again for the making of this movie (Spielberg producing, Zemeckis directing), but also kinda revealed that the sequel might be presented in 3D!!

But don’t get alarmed fellas: he talks about the 3D feature that’s the current trend on movie theaters, not the CGI-animated graphics. The animation on the sequel will remain 2D and live action sequences will be filmed, just like in the original movie. Even he explains the differences between the 3D films that are being projected currently (the computer-made ones and true 3D films that require special equipment for its filming, against the 2D movies converted to 3D) and how Roger Rabbit 2 will take advantage of the newest technologies for providing a better experience to the audiences.

The whole interview was uploaded by Youtube user sentieriselvaggi and Zemeckis starts to talk about the RR sequel at the 1:47 mark."

^What a relief on that no mo-cap detail!

A new interview with Richard Williams, in which he discusses The Thief publicly for the first time in something like 18 years (to my knowledge): http://www.onehugeeye.com/richard-williams/

Ah ...

Nice to read, though the writer did a bad job of transcribing it.

Nothing new there, certainly not about The Thief - Richard is just telling the same stories he's told many times in other interviews, although he's more honest about some of his anger toward his teachers, who he admired so much.

What is new is the revelation that he finished his ancient circus drawings short film, originally begun 50 years ago ... and that he's done about 8 minutes for his longer "new" piece, which is also an idea he's had almost his whole life.

That's great news!

I sent Sam Sleiman some stuff that will be in the third Scrapbook torrent, including my 2006 interviews with Roy Naisbitt and Alex Williams, which I don't think I've released publicly before (transcripts are in Scrapbook Pt 1).

Sam Sleiman Writes:

Finished listening to those wonderful interviews, and I have a few questions:

In your interview with Roy, he mentioned the great George Martin as being one of the composers to have worked on THE THIEF, however, he seemed unsure. Do you know if this is true or not?

I mentioned earlier that you should ask Kevin to check if anyone in England might have a better quality workprint. You asked Alex in one of your interviews if he had a good quality workprint, and he replied with a simple "no." If Dick's own son doesn't have a good quality workprint then I'm assuming the only other people to have one would be Disney. Or do you think it's possible there might be one floating out there somewhere?

Also, the first THIEF scrapbook finished downloading, and as I was going through it, I noticed ads which were from the tvark website. If you were able to download these videos, then surely you could download the Superman ad. Or were they downloaded by someone else?

TV Ark has changed since then. They were all downloadable at one point. I'd forgotten about those particular ads, and since apparently they're in there as by Williams, I'll add them to the Youtube page.

A better workprint is definitely out there somewhere. SOMEONE uploaded it to Emule, after all, and all we really need is the PAL VHS tape that came from. It's a good sign that whoever uploaded it is somewhat internet savvy, but a bad sign that 4 years have passed without anyone identifying the uploader.

There's also the matter of Calvert's workprint, which would be very helpful in high quality. It's a shame that Calvert is a twat not worth talking to.

It's known that Richard Williams approached a lot of musical legends about composing for The Thief. I don't think this ever went anywhere.

Recently, I emailed a friend of mine a link to the trailer for the Recobbled Cut, as he'd never heard of The Thief. Here was his response:
Wow. I was expecting it to be good, but I had no idea... The animation looks really smooth, and it has such a unique style. This looks like what fantasia wished it could be.

Update on The Thief Blog:

http://thethief1.blogspot.com/

"The 3rd turned out to be the most available date.
To all of you who can't be there, I apologise.
I'm sure we'll do it again in the years to come and I'll give everybody a bit more warning then.
Meanwhile:

Tuesday 3rd of August,
Star and Garter,
62 Poland Street,
Soho, London
6:30 or 7:00 onwards

See you there...

Michael"

And what perfect timing 'cuz Kevin is making his way to London on July 30th to begin shooting his Thief documentary!

That was posted over a week ago.

The timing is not a coincidence. Kevin was involved in the planning of the gathering, with Michael Schlingmann.

The seller of that print of Love Me Love Me Love Me informs me she's also got a print of "A Lecture on Man," an early Williams piece.

I've also added selected images back to

so that the opening page of this thread isn't quite so broken anymore.

Very nice!

I mentioned previously that at Hans Bacher's blog, he's discussed Richard Williams' work, and given us a few color screen grabs from The Sailor and the Devil, a film we don't have ....

http://one1more2time3.wordpress.com/tag ... -williams/

http://one1more2time3.files.wordpress.c ... n-anim.jpg

It looks to me like he has a copy of the film, and I emailed him to ask about it, but received no answer. Does anyone here know Bacher well?

I've discussed the Love Me Love Me Love Me 16mm print with the seller, and although she's selling it to the $10 winner, she will sell me "A Lecture On Man" and project the films for me so that I can make camcorder copies. I'll also be in touch with the buyer, who should have the ability to transfer it to video properly.
