The Thief and the Cobbler: Recobbled Cut

Pictures of cats welcome?

A safe haven for film buffs, comedians, moviemakers, and lovers of the glorious and absurd in our popular culture. We've brought lost films back to life, created tons of our own movies, and generally chronicled the funny and strange on the internet since 2001.

If Disney had some brains, they'd be working on a restoration of "The Thief" instead of making another crappy sequel...

Great find! Enjoyed seeing Don Hahn sporting the mustache, not to mention a rather young looking Alex Williams. The crew photo was also great, but it makes Dick look like a madman, which he was to a certain extent (if you know what I mean). On a side note, being the avid Tintin fan I am, Raul Garcia can be seen in some shots wearing a Tintin and Snowy sweater.

Brief interview with Richard by a fan ... not much here ...

Tony White presents an award to Richard at his October 2008 event ... again not too special but charming.

They also have a report of The Witch Swinging Across the Mountain that they did back a month or two ago.

Thanks for posting the clips Supervehicle!

Walter Dunlop writes:

I'm off to the Slapstick Comedy Festival in Bristol on Thursday. Loads of
good stuff (Harold Lloyd film with discussion involving Paul McGann, the
premiere of The Seventh Python followed by Neil Innes presenting "rare"
Bonzos footage, all sorts of other things - my diary is full for the four
days).

At the opening gala night (Michael Palin being interviewed by Graeme
Garden), there's a screening of Keaton's The Navigator with live
accompaniment. And who's this on Cornet? Richard Williams. Richard bloody
Williams. I forgot completely he was a musician as well!

In amongst the events over the four days, I may be getting a tour of
Aardman Studios (the friend I'm going with has been asked to cover the
event for Radio Scotland). Since Richard is resident there these days, I
might actually get to speak to him...

Hey Everybody,
I'm an art education teacher and I became fascinated when I saw for the first time the Miramax version (VHS) of this film. After that I started looking for a digital version of it and you can imagine what was my surprise and joyness when I had the opportunity to know the Gilchrist's project one year ago and the privilege to download and see his Recobbled Cut. Congratulations and thanks for this work.
The question is that I liked to translate into spanish the subtitles of the film. I have read that they has been created by Dmitry Bystrov. But the link that you provide in the web doesn't work any more.
I have tried getting too in the web of Dmitry Bystrov, but it's ununderstable for me.
So I have registered myself here in order to know if it's possible to get these subtitles. In the case that I could get them I will be very grateful and it will be a pleasure for me to share with you.
Congratulations again and thanks in advance

Hello Dersu. I can get you a copy of the subtitles for the film. I'm sorry they aren't currently online - it's a part of my website that I've been meaning to put back up.

What is your email address?

Walter Dunlop writes of the 2010 Slapstick festival ...

When Jon briefly interviewed Peter Lord (co-founder of Aardman Animations), we got to talking about Richard Williams (further up the page I mention that Neil Innes is a hero of mine – Richard Williams is the other).

If you don’t know anything about the man, have a search for his name and “The Thief and The Cobbler“. An extraordinary story. He’s now working for Aardman, and he plays cornet as a hobby – he was in the band for Thursday evening’s screening of “The Navigator”.

I mentioned how much I love that man and his work. Peter said, “d’you want to meet him? He’s just over there.” “Oh god, I couldn’t… could I?” I stammered. “Course you can!” he said, grabbed my shoulder and dragged me over to speak to my deity.

“This is Walter, a good friend from Edinburgh”, said the co-founder of Aardman, who I’d just met ten minutes before. And I found myself talking to someone so far up in my estimation that I can barely see him. I think I’m still trembling.

“A pleasure to meet you, Sir”, I stammered. “Oh for god’s sake, don’t call me Sir, call me Dick”, he said, and hugged me. If you could snapshot my life at a moment of it-doesn’t-get-better-than-this, there it is. Right there.
