The Thief and the Cobbler: Recobbled Cut

Pictures of cats welcome?

A safe haven for film buffs, comedians, moviemakers, and lovers of the glorious and absurd in our popular culture. We've brought lost films back to life, created tons of our own movies, and generally chronicled the funny and strange on the internet since 2001.

The WIRED blog mentions Richard Williams' A Christmas Carol, and The Thief and the Cobbler.

Noticed a 16mm copy of A Christmas Carol is up on eBay for a typical hefty price (bet the print is reddish too), and as usual, Chuck gets more attention than Richard.

Noticed two separate auctions for the same thing, but being priced far reasonable, but still terribly faded color.

A terrific original cel of The Thief being sold by MichaelZaius on Ebay.

Came across this brand new "Christmas Carol" VHS. This one however isn't the tape released by fisher price, instead it's "an authentic ABC Video release" (according to the seller): http://cgi.ebay.com/A-Christmas-Carol-1 ... 500wt_1182

Before I say anything, I think it would be appropriate if I introduced myself. For some time now, Garret has been posting links to Richard Williams related material and mentioning, "Courtesy Sam Sleiman". Well, one day I figured I'd make my own account on ffrevolution, so here I am.

Recently, I came across this video of Dick Williams talking the new "Expanded Edition" of "The Animator's Survival Kit". Here's the link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Abkz-oJ3HSs

Welcome aboard!

Too bad I lost out on the Thief cel a couple days ago, but I was glad to not pay over a hundred for it though since I'm rather tight this holiday season.

Thanks for the warm welcome. On a side note, I came across a signed copy of "The Animator's Survival Kit" on ebay: http://cgi.ebay.com/The-Animators-Survi ... 500wt_1182

Hmmm, almost tempted to get that but I already have a hardcover copy of my very own! Just finding out about an "expanded edition" of the book itself, I might be more up to getting that otherwise.

Recently came across an article addressing Robert Zemeckis about the upcoming "Roger Rabbit" sequel. The writer, who is against the idea of a sequel, suggests that if it has to be made, "Richard Williams has to be the animation supervisor on the film": http://www.hitfix.com/blogs/2008-12-6-m ... ger-rabbit

I've spoken to Drew McWeeny before, so no surprises if he sounds like a fan of Richard Williams. He's much better known as a contributor to Ain't It Cool News.

While I support Drew's views, I doubt Dick would be interested, since he has mentioned in the past that he wouldn't be returning for a sequel. But even if Dick reprises his role as animation director, I'm little skeptical about the film. Zemeckis stated in his interview with MTV that while he doesn't plan on converting "Roger Rabbit's" cartoon cast to CG, he is interested in using mocap... and we all know about Zemeckis' mocap obsession.

I'm hoping the mo-cap is used for special effects (it seems likely to me). I agree that Richard Williams should return (mainly animator supervisor). Incidentally, I'm looking foward for a Roger Rabbit sequel. Don't ask me why, but I just can't wait! :)

Thanks to a friend I've watched some of the disks in the 16-disc set - but it's the sort of thing you really have to take the time with. It's a very detailed training course and you have to take it slowly the same way you would a full-semester animation class .... perhaps taking it several times. It's amusing to just watch casually, and there's surprises in there for Thief fans - new animation of a familiar witch and old photos with familiar characters on the wall - but I'd want to be in a very serious animation mode and take the time with it.

I have been in a serious animation mode from time to time - I've done animation - but really learning it? This set is the good stuff, just as the book was, but much better in this form.

The idea of a Rabbit sequel makes me cringe. The film was, as Dick says, a "one-off." Even the Roger shorts done immediately afterward have absolutely none of the style of the film in them. Pretty much the only Roger animation I've seen apart from the film which is on-model and looks like Dick's work is that Diet Coke commercial! Sadly enough ...
