The Thief and the Cobbler: Recobbled Cut

Pictures of cats welcome?

A safe haven for film buffs, comedians, moviemakers, and lovers of the glorious and absurd in our popular culture. We've brought lost films back to life, created tons of our own movies, and generally chronicled the funny and strange on the internet since 2001.

Youtube is down for the moment, but this morning Arabian Knight 3/8 was (and probably still is) working perfectly again. Also, Cartoon Brew has posted a rare Raggedy Ann and Andy: A Musical Adventure pencil test!:

NOTE: Youtube is down for the moment, so try the video later.

Ah yes, Jerry or Michael was going to send that to me for the DVD but couldn't find it at the time. Jerry did send the TV spot and transferred the reel I got on Ebay.

Not good quality on Youtube - I'm downloading it with Keepvid.com hoping that the MP4 file has better quality.

(EDIT: It doesn't. Will get a better one from Jerry.)

Dmitry Bystrov writes today with a pretty well done subtitle set for the Recobbled Cut.

http://www.ffrevolution.com/thief/Subti ... obbler.zip

It can be opened and edited with aegisub ...
http://www.aegisub.net/

And from there you can export the ASS file to other formats. While Aegisub doesn't show SRT (and other formats) as an option in the regular Save As dialogue box, you can still save directly to those formats. Just add the appropriate file extension yourself to the filename, and Aegisub will pick the right format automagically. Aegisub natively works with the Advanced SubStation Alpha format (aptly abbreviated ASS) which allows for many advanced effects in the subtitles, apart from just basic timed text.

I've made some minor text based edits to the subs, more might need to be made. Not sure. I haven't looked at the subs in their actual editor, or as part of the movie, yet. Aegisub is more of a PC program so my Mac isn't going anywhere near it. Feel free to toss me your corrected subs in SRT, TXT and other formats.

Hello Garrett,

Our Ryazan-based team has made English subs for The Thief and the Cobbler. They
were timed for Recobbled Cut Mark 3 DVDRip and slightly lag from DVD
version.

English text goes from the original scripts (where available).
All 3 (1969, 1980, and 1990) were used, as even the oldest contains some
unique text for Witch.

I hope we can make Russian subs in a few days (the translation is nearly
ready, only needs to be put in).

Thanks for your great work, would you please include subs in the next
release? :)

Thanks to Jerry Beck, who sent me a DVD copy of the Tissa David "Candy Hearts and Paper Flowers" pencil test from Raggedy Ann & Andy: A Musical Adventure. It's MUCH easier to watch in this form than to watch it on Youtube.

It's only a 200 MB file so I could have uploaded it to Megaupload. Instead I've decided to make it a torrent file at The Pirate Bay, because I know it'll reach a larger audience there.

Here's the torrent file. Enjoy.

http://thepiratebay.org/torrent/4589902 ... nture_1977)_-_Tiss

On a Mac, I use the torrent client Azureus. I don't know what I'd use on a PC, but uTorrent, Bitlord and BitTornado seem to be popular.

Meanwhile --

Dmitry Bystrov checks in again with English and Russian subtitles for The Thief and the Cobbler. I've updated the file. It's now in SRT as well as ASS format, and the Russian subs are in SRT format - UTF-16 encoding.

Enjoy, my Russian comrades.

Hi everyone, Merry Christmas & Happy New Year.

I don't know what's been happening in the Thief world as I haven't been here for a while.

But...

I FINALLY found the collection of DVDs that Garrett sent me long ago (including Recobbled Cut Mk. III) that had been missing for the better part of a year. That was why I couldn't make the English subtitles, even though I had promised I would. However, I come back to see that someone else has done it already, so I guess that's that. Does this Dmitry fellow have an account on this forum?

If anyone needs me to correct anything with the subtitles (such as timing issues), subtitle something else, or some other thing, please let me know and I'll be happy to help.

Toward the end of this clip from Charlie Brooker's Screenwipe, as he's talking about Gladiators (in the US, we know it as American Gladiators), a familiar section of "Scheherezade" starts to play, which I used in my trailer and Recobbled Cut, and which was used previously in "I Drew Roger Rabbit."

Many of Charlie's music choices in the series are oblique movie references. I wonder if anyone there at Zeppotron is a Thief and the Cobbler fan .....

A great find, Tygerbug! Someone should contact the winner once the bid is over. Anyway, Animation World Magazine has a great 3-page article on Richard Williams' Masterclass:

Also, head over to The Thief Blog for some great Nasrudin pics!:

Retrojunk has metioned The Thief and The Cobbler in it's recent article: "13 Random Movies.

http://www.retrojunk.com/details_articles/4383/

"11. The Thief and the Cobbler
This movie has a history. Beginning the work in 1964, Richard Williams intended for the film to be his masterpiece, and a milestone in the art of animation. The Thief and the Cobbler was in and out of production for over two decades, until Williams, buoyed by his success as animation director on Who Framed Roger Rabbit, signed a deal in 1990 to have Warner Bros. finance and distribute the film. This deal fell through when Williams was unable to complete the film on time. As Warners pulled out, The Completion Bond Company assumed control of the project and had it finished by producer Fred Calvert without Williams. Two versions of Calvert's completed The Thief and the Cobbler were released; one was issued in Australia and South Africa in 1993 as The Princess and the Cobbler and the other in the United States in 1995 as Arabian Knight, distributed by Miramax Family Films. As the last one was a stoner movie, this movie is super trippy. A fairly entertaining story, but the backgrounds of this movie are insane. Even if you are not into drugs but like visually stimulating animated movies, this is for you."

Hi Tygerbug, I have a question.
Would the subtitles you posted for "The Thief and the Cobbler" synch up with the "Mark 3 Rough Cut" version? I'm asking because this is the version I have.

I tried it and they synch up all right, even though they sometimes may be a second or two off. It's watchable.

I'm quite impressed with the transcribing job the group did on these subs. Well done.
One minor quibble however and this may be nit-picky, is that none of the bizarre side chatter from Zigzag's lackeys is transcribed, such as in the scene when they are sneaking the gold balls into the castle and the Thief creeps in. Though perhaps this expectation of mine may come from being used to closed-captions from commercial releases where every single sound effect gets captioned.

A German friend has sent me a DVD with the German soundtrack to A Christmas Carol. Any interest?

Some Thief news:

Ricahrd Williams has opened the Bristol School of Animation and see a rare Nasruddin storyboard over at The Thief Blog: http://thethief1.blogspot.com/

See The Thief and The Cobbler (I'm guessin' the Reccobled Cut) at the University Center Theater March 12th at 8pm!
