"In 1381, England was in trouble ... is the camera on?"

Written by and starring Ben Sipprell, Garrett Gilchrist, and Susan Milne, the 49-minute epic "1381" was a departure for Orange Cow Productions thematically. It was based on actual historical events, had recognizable recurring characters and lots of adlibbing, and was designed to educate as well as bewilder. But apart from the history angle, it's the same madness you've come to expect, as the crew rampage through medieval times and demolish most of what they find in the service of comedy.

"1381" finds England in turmoil. The Black Death has killed off half of Europe, and is making a soul-singing comeback. The wealthy are maintaining their wealth by pushing the poor further into snow-farming poverty. And god only knows what's going on in Norway. In the middle of all this, one brave man stands up to revolt for a bit, insult the king, order a beer and die. That man's name is Wat Tyler, and this is his story. Sort of. It's also the story of King Oluf [a mama's boy], Anne of Bohemia [someone to cheer at], Charles III [a violent Frenchie], John of Gaunt [a right nasty bastard], Geoffrey Chaucer [yeah, he thinks he's so big], and John Ball [a ball]. More importantly, it's the story of three history students trying to get a movie done in a week.

Directed by Garrett Gilchrist and produced [uncredited] by Ben Sipprell, this tale of heroic rats, Black Death Repellent and groovy rebel Englishmen was nearly titled "1381: A Look Back in Horror," but the cast settled on the simpler title. An Orange Cow Production, "1381" was created for a February 1999 deadline in Mrs. Waricha's W-History-UCT class, with credit at Masuk High School and the University of Connecticut. It got an A. Walter Tyler is his name, but everyone calls him "Wat."

something about it. He's a rebel, man. Ben Sipprell is Wat
